Are You An Entrepreneur?

July 21st, 2009 by Shawn Leave a reply »

The EntrepreneurEntrepreneurs are a special pool of people that have traits highly distinguishable from the norm. Their work ethic and craving for knowledge can be very encouraging, and at the some times, intimidating. Their internal drive is astounding compared to that of someone that simply would like to collect a check and go home for the day (although nothing wrong with that). So I would like to share a few tid bits of traits or ways to identify the entrepreneur around, or in you.

1) Curiosity

Do you remember as a kid asking the question “why?” in reply to an answer over and over until the other party (or parent) finally gave up? An entrepreneur is always asking that question, not to be annoying, but to honestly get a better understanding of the world. They recieve an amazing amount of information from these answers, later putting together these pieces to make their creation. It’s simple really, if you don’t ask questions and assume you already know the answer, you don’t grow, staying stagnant (remember high school when we knew everything already?) and being stagnant doesn’t help anyone.

2) Goal Setting

The entrepreneur has to find it in herself to make deadlines and fulfill them. There is no schedule waiting on their desk in the morning, it is up to them to figure out how they will accomplish their short and long term goals. This can be tough for all, especially since going through an education system where we were told when and how we were going to do everything. It’s a box that has to be broken out of for the entrepreneur, a new set of glasses to look through.

3) Self Doubt

Without a “how-to” guide on becoming an entrepreneur, besides theories and stories, this can bring self doubt that has to be dealt with at times. It can become very easy to fall into the trap of not believing in your self and what you are doing, especially when most likely no one in your family is doing the same thing. Therefore it’s very important to stay connected to those that are in the same struggles as you are, facing the same challenges. This can help you feel more confident in your abilities, while also finding answers to problems every entrepreneur faces.

4) Work Ethic

Entrepreneurs obviously don’t punch a time clock, they create their own schedule accomplishing an amount of tasks that the average person would think impossible. Their schedule consists of working on a business that doesn’t have a real end, or finish line, a goal that is every extended in the future. As Gary Vaynerchuck puts it, if you want to accomplish your dreams, you can’t keep watching episodes of Lost.

5) RiskCalculated Risk

There is a pretty large amount of risk that goes into an Entrepreneur’s life style, yet calculated risk. You’ve probably heard the stories, “I bet everything I owned and eventually got to where I am today.” Although it sounds far fetched, they probably did bet everything they owned, but if they got to where they did, it was almost certainly calculated. Entrepreneurs learn from their mistakes or risks, giving them the ability to make decisions some might not have the ability in them to make. It’s just like anything else, once you’ve done it enough it comes easy (practice makes perfect).

Although these points are not the trait of every single entrepreneur, they are more common than not. Being an entrepreneur I can relate to these points completely, as they describe in every way that I want to be, and am going to be.

What other traits do you feel should have been mentioned? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
