Please, bear with me…
I’m going to get more technical than usual in this post.
But stick around, it’s going to help you.
Let’s Get To the Elephant In The Room:
What is PHP?
Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) is a programming language that most websites run on (79%). I’m keeping this simple, but know that not all websites use it, but most do.
PHP is a server-side language that allows the processing of the website to happen on the server, before the visitor can look at your website. It handles all the complicated tasks that a Content Management System like WordPress seem easy.
If you have a WordPress website, it’s running on PHP. Drupal, Magento, Joomla? Yes, all run on PHP.
I’m Very Impressed – Why Does This Matter Again?
Getting to the point…
Like Windows, there are many versions of PHP. There are also many versions of PHP that are no longer supported, and slow.
What This Means For You
If you have an outdated version of PHP this could be a major security issue.
If you’re running anything from PHP 7 and below, these versions are no longer being supported. That’s a big deal and something many web development companies are ignoring.
Secondly, older versions of PHP run much slower than the newer versions.
You can see a difference of your website performing up to 2x faster with 50% less memory consumption going from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.
Again, not to mention the added security benefits.
Wrap It Up Already!
Check with your current web development company and ask what version of PHP your server is running and stop talking. If they have a blank look on their face, can’t provide the answer, or they say anything less than PHP 7, your website it at risk and slower than it needs to be. Plus, if a detail like your PHP version isn’t up-to-date, what else is your web company missing?
By the way, they need to answer with PHP 7.3 (the latest version) because support for 7 just ended in January 2019. Not to mention, there is a performance boost of us to 20% going from 7 to 7.3.
