You should backup your website so you don’t lose it.
Website Backups = Website Insurance
Often, businesses don’t give a second thought about backups.
They spend thousands of dollars and countless hours into their website and give no time at all to a backup solution, until it’s too late.
No, your website hosting company is not “taking care of it.” Occasionally hosting companies do take backups, but it’s not a guarantee.
Surely your web design company has backups, right? Have you asked them? If it hasn’t come up throughout the process (a big red flag) then I wouldn’t count on it. They may have the original files when you launched the site, but you’ve made a countless number of changes since then. If you restore that backup, everything you’ve made since launch day is up in smoke.
What Could Go Wrong?
There are many things that can go wrong with your website.
A hacker gets in and breaks the site. Or even better, they insert malware and send all your website visitors to their favorite casino or other nefarious sites. Google flags your website as spam and your traffic has dropped off completely. That’s a good time to revert to a backup while you figure out the issue.
Or maybe one of your staff accidentally breaks the site or deletes a bunch of content/pages/images by accident. It would sure be nice to “hit undo” by reverting to the previous days (or hour) backup.
What Can You Do?
Have a backup system in place.
Talk to your website provider and ask about your backup system/policy. Are they taking backups monthly, weekly, daily, hourly?
