Sample audit

This is what a Graticle website audit looks like.

An audit adapted from a real one we wrote for a family-owned self-storage business, with anything that could identify them removed. Yours will cover your site and your Google presence in the same plain language.

The short version

The website is in better shape than most we review. It is clean, well written and easy to read. The gaps are in three places: how fast it appears on a phone, how many ways a visitor can act besides calling, and how the business shows up in Google’s local results, where it competes with a newly opened facility and with larger operators that have many more reviews.

What is working

Real, local content

Plain language, a long local history, a clear offer and the towns the business serves.

Clean technical basics

Accessibility, security practices and search basics all scored 100 out of 100 in our check, and every image has a text description.

A well-kept Google profile

A strong star rating, complete hours, a recent post, and a Google summary that praises the owners and the facility.

What to fix first, in order

Every audit ends with a ranked list, so you know where to start.

  1. Get more Google reviews

Only a handful of reviews, while nearby competitors had dozens and, for the biggest operator, over a hundred. People compare stars and review counts before they ever visit a website. Ask long-term tenants at rent time and move-out, and reply to every review.

  2. Give visitors more ways to act than calling

No form on the home page and only one on the Contact page. Add a short request form, a unit size guide and a call button that stays on screen on phones.

  3. Make it faster on phones

The main content took longer than Google’s 2.5 second target on a phone-speed test, run several times. The cause was fonts and scripts that had to load first, an oversized logo and photos that were not set to be remembered.

  4. Add a page for each town served

Several nearby towns were listed but none had its own page, and Google can only match a town search to a page about that town. It ranked third in the map results for its own town and outside the top three for the larger town nearby. This is the approach we used for a storage client in Kelso.

  5. Clean up listings

A different phone number on a map app, a second Facebook page pointing to an old website, and a large new competitor that opened this summer.

  6. Strengthen the thin pages

Four pages ran 115 to 170 words with very short titles. Each needs a clearer purpose and a few more helpful lines.

What we could not check from outside

We are clear about the limits of an outside review. We could not see Search Console, which shows what people actually type to find you, or call and form tracking, which shows which pages bring in leads. If you give us access, we include both.

How we read your site

We check your pages, your speed on a phone, your search basics and your Google Business Profile, then search the way your customers do. Software helps us collect numbers and a person decides what matters for your business. See what we look at.
